Flotsam and Jetsam

Pia Boschetti from Latitude Gallery (high end jewellery shop and gallery) in Geraldton, came up with a sensational concept a couple of years ago to do something with the abundance of rubbish that is found on our local beaches and islands.  She took her boat and a team of helpers to the Abrolhos Islands and collected rubbish (in conjunction with Clean Up Australia) from the beaches - a huge boat load full of rubbish.  The rubbish was then unloaded onto the wharf in Geraldton and community members asked to come and take what they wanted.  An original artwork is then to be created consisting of at least one item they collected from the wharf.

I went along and collected quite a large quantity of "rubbish" or treasure as I called it!!   I had my homeschool kids coming and thought it would be fantastic for them to create an artwork to enter.

Have a look and see what happened.

This is a portion of some of the flotsam and jetsam.  You should have seen the looks on the kids faces when I told them what we were going to do!!!!  They couldn't quite believe we were going to use this rubbish to make something - priceless.

The more we worked the more they got into it and understood the concept.

We had to work out how we would put things together and how we could interpret each piece.

We had a pretty messy studio but what fun!!

Sneak snippets of what we were working on.  I loved the thongs but no-one used them!!  I might have to.

A "teaser" of a finished piece.  Can't show you of course as it's going into the exhibition.

An another "teaser" pic.

This was my entry from two years ago.  Absolutely loved "playing" with the kids on this project - and now they have some awesome entried for the Kids Section of the exhibition.  Can't wait to see everything finished.
